Fleming College Is National Bound In Cross Country

Frances Emery of the Fleming Knights cross country team qualifies for the CCAA National Championship in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Peterborough, ON November 6, 2019 – The Fleming Knights Cross Country team qualifies for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championship meet in Grande Prairie, Alberta after Frances Emery finishes 11th place overall at the OCAA Provincial Championship meet in the women’s six kilometer race.

Frances will be competing on behalf of the Fleming Knights, Fleming College, and as a competitor from the OCAA on November 8 and 9. The CCAA National Championship in Grand Prairie, Albert will pit Frances against all of the top female runners from across the country.

As a first year athlete on the Fleming Knights cross country team, Frances is only in her second year competing in cross country running. Her first year was in her grade 12 year at high school. Being Frances’s fourth race as a Fleming Knight, she did extremely well to run her race in 24:32, just a mere 46 seconds off the first place race time, and at a Provincial Championship no less.

Not only has Frances had success at the Provincial meet, Frances has had a successful season at the invitational meets. An example of this success was Frances placing fourth overall at the Centennial meet with a time of 25:58.

“Frances is an incredible athlete to coach. She is extremely talented and determined to improve, constantly pushing her limits. Frances also brings an energy to the team which motivates others, strengthening the team dynamic,” said Knights’ head coach Andy Hein. “I’m excited to see her take on the course at CCAA’s. With a cross country skiing background I believe the elements will work in her favor.”

“I am still in shock that I am off to nationals next week. Knowing that around this time last year, I was just starting my running career. I am extremely thankful and happy for the opportunity to wear the Fleming jersey and compete at such a high level with such great quality of runners,” says Frances. “I am also looking forward to the atmosphere and getting to make my friends and family proud.”
